Product Details

HENRY NOCK, LONDON
A RARE .650 FLINTLOCK CAVALRY CARBINE, serial no. 6/78,
circa 1796, with 20in, round iron smoothbore barrel, private proofs and moulded bands at breech, military style borderline engraved lock (cleaned, top-jaw replaced) signed 'H. NOCK' at the tail and marked with a 'G.R' and crown device below pan, walnut handrail full-stock with carved apron around the top-tang (bottom half of butt armourer repaired in antiquity), brass furniture, the top-spur of heel-plate engraved '6' over '78', small brass trigger-guard and tang, iron saddle-bar (no ring), brass ramrod throat and single pipe and captive iron stirrup ramrod

Other Notes: In the world of military carbines this piece appears to be unique. It is possibly one of the carbines mentioned in Blackmore's book 'Gunmakers of London 1350-1850' on page 63 attributed to General Harcourt of the 16th Light Dragoons who apparently ordered 500 carbines of 'his own design' from Henry Nock at the price of 50s each. At the time of writing Blackmore had not been able to locate a surviving example of this carbine.
