Product Details

** FORMERLY PROPERTY OF COLONEL K.G. HARVEY (S.A.S.), ICD, DSO, MBE, ED.
A REPRODUCTION REGIMENTAL BRASS WINGED DAGGER INSIGNIA,
being a solid brass casting approximately 30in. x 14in. in the form of the Special Air Service 'Winged Dagger' emblem with the motto 'WHO DARES WINS' below and in imitation of the originals that were displayed at the Regimental Barracks of the Rhodesian S.A.S., Kabrit, Rhodesia, suspension chain to the reverse, weight approximately 20kgs.

Other Notes: The history behind this SAS insignia is as follows:
The vendor's mother, Samantha Hall, was Col. K.G. Harvey's secretary. Harvey was an original whose exploits are documented in various chronicles and books. He became an architect in Salisbury, Rhodesia and due to his connections and past history was at one time appointed Honourary Colonel of the Rhodesian S.A.S. Mrs Hall, by association, did a lot of work in raising funds and generally assisting in his military duties,
At the breakup and dismantling of the Rhodesian S.A.S. Harvey asked her what she would like as a keepsake or memento in return for her services to the Squadron. She chose these brass wings.
Samantha and her husband Ted moved in due course to Gaborone, Botswana where she founded a landscaping business. On one of the vendor's visits he was given the wings and asked to get them out of sight and away from any association with her. She was concerned that if they were found in her possession she may possibly be accused of covert activities as apparently Botswana was not in a good relationship with the Rhodesian or even the subsequent Zimbabwean governments. Whatever her reasons, the vendor recovered the wings back to South Africa.
We are gratefully indebted to Colin Prain (Rhodesia) Squadron 22 Special Air Service Regimental Association, Durban for his assistance with this lot.
