A GOOD 1857 PATTERN HIGHLAND SWORD FOR THE GORDON HIGHLANDERS, serial no. 37045,
manufactured in 1899, with straight double edged 33in. blade etched with interlaced thistles within arabesque panels, the legend 'GORDON HIGHLANDERS' below a crown and separated by another thistle and the trade mark and address details for Henry Wilkinson together with a Prince of Wales feathers device with 'BY APPOINTMENT' and a Royal crest, narrow central blind fuller and inlaid proofmark, the plated half-basket hilt carved and pierced with Scottish thistle devices and bearing a carved and engraved central badge of the Gordon Highlanders above the motto 'BYDAND', internal suede liner with red outer facing and cream inner and fixed to the hilt by blue ribbons, wire-bound sharkskin grip and chequered back-strap and pommel, complete with its plated dress scabbard (some light external corrosion on scabbard)

Other Notes: According to the Wilkinson records, this sword left the factory on 26th October 1899 described in the ledger as a 'claymore'. The purchaser's name is not recorded. We are gratefully indebted to www.armresearch.co.uk for the above information
