A .577/450 MODEL 1895 'IMPROVED' MARTINI-HENRY ZAR CONTRACT RIFLE BY WESTLEY RICHARDS, serial no. 11898,
dates to 1895, with 32 1/2in. sighted barrel, receiver marked 'WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co.' on left, with 'MADE SPECIALLY FOR / ZAR', cocking indicator in the receiver block, two barrel bands, the rear of Baddeley type, the front with bayonet mount, serial number front left of trigger-guard, metalwork with blinded pitting, script legible but rubbed, stock varnished, missing cleaning rod, 49in. overall

Provenance: The Westley Richards Improved Martini-Henry rifle was a result of orders by the South African Republic (ZAR, 'Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek') placed with the company prior to the infamous Jameson Raid of 1896, which highlighted the need for modern smokeless, repeating rifles resulting in the Boer Republics ordering Mauser rifles. These Martinis were manufactured for Westley Richards by Auguste Francotte in Liege, Belgium
