A RARE CASED 12-BORE TUBELOCK DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN BY JOSEPH MANTON, LONDON, serial no. 1763,
for 1801 / 2 and converted by the makers to tubelock from flint, with browned twist 32in. barrels, the slightly raised top-rib signed 'JOSEPH MANTON HANOVER SQUARE LONDON' (renewed, possibly at conversion), patent breeches with platinum bordered offset touch-holes and four platinum lines, top-tang with broad sunken sighting groove and border and acanthus scroll engraving, flat bar-action recoloured locks with feathered scroll engraving and starbursts to the front of the hinged and rollered tube-clamps (both external bridles cracked and pinned) and signed below the tension springs 'JOSEPH MANTON PATENT', engraved slab-sided hammers with knife-edge noses, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist (chipped below left lock-bar), reblued iron furniture and complete with a later period walnut storage case lined and compartmented in plum velvet, Hanover Street trade label inside lid and retaining a period flask by Hawksley and sundry maintenance items including a dismountable turnscrew and corkscrew set and a number of original tubes
