A .360 (ROOK) THOMAS 1871 PATENT SINGLE-BARRELLED TOPLEVER HAMMER ROOK RIFLE, serial no. 6609,
for 1881, 28 1/4in. black powder only octagonal barrel with file cut top flat, open sights with three folding leaf sights, white metal inlaid sight lines and marked '50', '100', '150' and '200', bead fore-sight, the sides engraved 'HOLLAND & HOLLAND' to the left and '98. NEW BOND ST.. LONDON.' to the right, some external pitting, offset toplever, carved percussion fence, rebounding back-action lock with high spurred hammer (catching fence), action with John Thomas patent barrel bolting mechanism, patent no. 3091 of 15th November 1871, fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, retaining traces of original finish (some exterior rusting in places), 14 3/4in. figured pistolgrip stock with steel pistolgrip-cap and buttplate, fore-end with crosspin release (crosspin escutcheons rusted), and repaired horn finial, weight 5lb. 9oz.

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the rifle was ordered on the 27th April 1881, no client name is recorded.
