A .577 (3IN.) CORDITE 'MODEL 1897' TAKE-DOWN FALLING-BLOCK SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 34459,
circa 1902, 27in. detachable cordite proof barrel of rarer octagonal form, incorporating patent no. 9711 of 18th May 1894, use number 340, with the Westley triangle at the breech end, file cut top flat with ornately decorated best quality block-mounted open sights with white metal sight lines and marked for 100, 200 and 300 yds. (for the Indian market), the block with scroll and matt detailing with engraved shell designs to the top, block mounted bead fore-sight with flip-up moonsight and folding protector hood, the left side of the barrel engraved 'WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO. LONDON.', 'FOR 3IN. CASE .577 BORE', the right side with ''W.R. PATENT DETACHABLE BARREL 340', L. B. Taylor patent automatic tang safety, patent no. 10068 of 24th May 1894, use number 221, with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, cranked underlever, acanthus scroll border engraving, the left side with the makers name in a scrolling banner, brushed finish, 14in. well-figured pistolgrip stock with engraved steel pistolgrip-cap (with trap), sling swivels and including 3/4in. distressed rubber recoil pad, fore-end with Deeley & Edge patent release and horn finial, the fore-end iron marked 'PATENT 9711', weight 9lbs. 1oz.
