A SUBSTANTIAL 8-BORE PERCUSSION FOWLING-PIECE, no visible serial number,
made between 1825-42 and converted later to conventional percussion, with heavy octagonal to sixteen-sided to round 43in. barrel, the top-flat marked in script '77 ST JAMES'S STREET, ST JAMES'S' (rubbed), patent breech inlet with a platinum poincon to top marked 'C. MOORE LONDON PATENT' and a platinum line and plug, fully acanthus leaf border and scroll engraved top-tang, border and acanthus scroll engraved flat lock signed on the bar 'C. MOORE, LONDON' and retaining the external roller spring from a priming system based on W. Westley Richards English Patent No. 4611 of 1821, replacement hammer (spur cracked), walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist (worn smooth), butt drilled through centrally possibly for mounting as a cripple-stopper, iron furniture, retaining its original ramrod but one pipe, the right hand barrel key escutcheons and fore-end tip lacking, surface corrosion present, overall length 60in., weight approximately 15 1/4lbs.
