Product Details

* A RARE 17.5mm PERCUSSION BREECH-LOADING SERVICE-RIFLE, MODEL 'NORWEGIAN KAMMERLADER', serial no. 2594,
dated for 1852 with 36 1/2in. rifled barrel (cleaned externally), block and blade fore-sight, folding 'L' shaped rear-sight, hinged upward-tilting chamber block operated via a side lever, manually cocking guarded under-hammer, beech full-stock, heavy brass furniture including separate guard for trigger and three barrel-bands, no provision for clearing rod and bayonet lug mounted to left side of muzzle, 55 1/2in. overall, weight approximately 11lbs.

Other Notes: The unusual Norwegian Kammerlader was the first successful breech loading service-rifle to be adopted in quantity by any nation and quickly proved the advantages of breech-loading over the more conventional muzzle-loaders of the day. Most were subsequently converted to accept rimfire cartridges and then later destroyed when they went out of service. Unmodified examples are seldomly encountered today.
