WILKINSON SWORD LTD, LONDON
A CASED 200TH ANNIVERSARY PONIARD, no visible serial number,
manufactured in 1972, with 10 3/4in. stiletto blade, oned side etched with scrolls and arabesques surrounding a panel marked '1772-1972', maker's details etched at forte, cast gilded cross-guard with drum quillions, smooth polished ivorine grip and gilded tear-drop pommel, in its fitted wood case lined in burgundy velvet, the outer lid bearing a plaque marked 'PRESENTED TO E.R. CHILTON BY WILKINSON SWORD LTD ON THE OCCASION OF THE COMPANY'S BI-CENTENARY 1972', complete with its black leather scabbard with gilt fittings.
Other Notes: Vendor tradition associates the recipient 'E.R. Chilton' with the famous firm of lockmakers, E. Chilton. However, this is unlikely and the E.R. Chilton referred to is more likely to be an employee of Wilkinson Sword Ltd.
