A RARE 6mm CO2-POWERED AIR-PISTOL, MODEL 'SYSTEM GIFFARD', no visible serial number,
circa 1880, with round 10 1/2in. barrel signed in gilt 'PAUL GIFFARD INVENTEUR BREVETS', dove-tailed blade fore-sight, adjustable tangent rear-sight, provision for CO2 reservoir cylinder beneath the barrel (absent), action engraved with scrollwork, lever-action tap with circular breech for ball, central exposed hammer, walnut fluted grips (some shrinkage), borderline engraved grip-strap, moulded iron spire pommel-cap, iron trigger-guard with finger-spur and adjustable trigger, the whole shallow frosted with some slightly deeper pitting throughout, 18in. overall, weight approximately 2 1/2lbs.
Other Notes: All Giffard CO2 pistols are scarce, but the majority encountered are manufactured by Manufrance or Stephanoise. Very few are actually signed 'Giffard'
