A FINE CASED .451 (WHITWORTH) PERCUSSION THREE-BAND RIFLE FOR VOLUNTEERS, serial no. D284,
circa 1865, with 36in. Whitworth rifled barrel, block with adjustable tunnel fore-sight, micro-adjustable elevating ladder rear-sight, the top of breech signed 'WHITWORTH PATENT', commercial proofs, plain top-tang, plain colour hardened lock signed 'MANCHESTER ORDNANCE & RIFLE CO.', with the Whitworth 'wheatsheaf' trademark to the tail and bolted safe forwards of the hammer, chequered walnut full-stock with blued iron furniture including numbered trigger guard, smooth heel-plate and three barrel-bands, iron ramrod with rotating hexagonal tip, much original blued finish with strong amounts of colour throughout complete with its banana-shaped oak storage case and a separate period pocket case containing two spare nipples, sight adjustment tools, an alternative tunnel fore-sight, spare fore-sight and rear-sight blades and an aperture to store the ladder rear-sight
