AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE BOXED .22 BREAK-BARREL 22K GOLD-PLATED AIR-RIFLE, MODEL 'HW80', serial no. 924278,
circa 1983, with 19 1/2in. barrel, tunnel fore-sight, adjustable rear-sight, plain air-chamber railed for a telescopic sight and angular beech half-stock with chequered pistol-grip and rubber heel-plate, all metal surfaces plated in 22K gold (polished thin in high wear areas), appearing unfired together with its makers card carton (losses)
Other Notes: The story of the Golden Weihrauchs started when the three directors of Hull Cartridge Company were each given an HW35E model, resplendent in 22K gold plate, for sales of Weihrauch products. These rifles were featured in the Airgun World publication, and a few customers enquired whether they could purchase similar examples for themselves. Weihrauch refused to make more plated HW35Es, but bowing under pressure made a limited run of HW80S (as here) and HW77S. It is believed less than 50 guns across all models were produced in this finish, which has proved over time to be very fragile as the guns were nickel-plated first before being gold plated in an attempt to fix the finish but in practice it does not adhere well
