A 7.63mm (MAUSER) SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL, MODEL 'C96 PRE-WAR COMMERCIAL', serial no. 70397, COMPLETE WITH MATCHING HOLSTER- STOCK,
manufactured in 1905, with 5 1/2in. barrel, blued receiver, milled frame with new style safe, grooved wooden grips, much original finish, complete with a period and matching number wooden holster-stock, the right hand side bearing a white-metal plaque engraved 'H.M.S. PHILOMEL CAPTURED FROM AFGHAN GUN RUNNERS PERSIAN GULF 1908-14'
Other Notes: H.M.S. Philomel was recommissioned in February 1908 (she was originally commissioned as a 'Pearl Class' cruiser in 1890) for service with the Mediterranean Fleet under the command of Captain John Seagrave. She provided assistance in the wake of the earthquake at Messina in Sicily. The following year she served with the East Indies Station, running patrols from Aden in the Persian Gulf for two years. Eventually she was sold to the New Zealand Navy where she was broken up in 1947.
