circa 1770 and possibly for police use, with heavy 4in. barrel, carved top-rib signed 'EDINBURGH', the muzzle flat engraved 'F.O.S.' and 'NO4' engraved top-tang with shallow sighting groove, flat clip-tailed borderline engraved lock signed 'JOHN THOMSON', sliding safe behind the hammer, walnut full-stock with coarsely chequered bag-shaped butt, the left hand cheek stamped in the wood (inverted) 'C1' and '245', white metal fore-end cap and wood ramrod
