A GOOD 16-BORE PINFIRE SPORTING GUN BY SAUERBREY OF BASEL, no visible number,
circa 1860, with 29 3/8in. blued barrels signed on the underside 'R. COCKERILL ACIER', Lefaucheux patent with the rotating under lever engraved with the original owners initial 'C.B.', the action body and levers all foliate scroll engraved, back-action locks finely engraved with foliate band edge decoration, the right hand lock with a game bird in a landscape surrounded by foliate scroll decoration and the left with a woodland fox scene, elaborate hammers, the lockplates engraved with scrolls around each hammer and the makers name 'SAUERBREY BASEL', square fronted trigger-guard bow engraved with a huntsman with his gun in a wooded background, elongated the trigger-guard plate and action tang, figured walnut butt with chequered wrist
Provenance: The dominance of the Liege gun industry in Western Europe is evident in this sporting gun, they supplied major gun parts in the white for retail gun makers all over Europe to finish to their customers requirements. This gun is a perfect example of this aspect of the European gun trade in the 19th century. The Cockerill steel making company was founded in 1841 by an Englishman John Cockerill some 15 miles from Liege, the company which still bears his name continues to operate as 'The Cockerill Sambre Group'. V. Sauerbrey was a very famous Swiss gun maker 1844-1881, based in Basel and was noted for very high quality sporting guns with offices in London, Paris and the U.S.A.
