A .577 SNIDER / ENFIELD MK III SERVICE CAVALRY CARBINE, CIRCA 1870, serial no. 588,
with 19 1/4in. barrel rifled with five grooves, blade on block front-sight and the carbine pattern 1861 ladder rear-sight graduated to 600 yards, the breech struck with full Enfield proof and inspection stamps together with 'STEEL', fitted with the improved MK III positive bolt locking breech arrangement, the lock bears the Crown 'V.R.' cypher on the tail and '1870 ENFIELD' to the centre, regulations brass mounted walnut half-stock the butt impressed with an Enfield 1st class roundel, the butt-cap with trap for cleaning rods (missing)

Provenance: The Snider Mk III cavalry carbine was a new made arm it featured the improved locking action and a steel barrel, earlier carbines had iron barrels. Between 1869 and 1872, 14,800 Snider cavalry carbines were produced at Enfield
