A .54 5TH MODEL BURNSIDE CAPPING BREECH LOADING CARBINE OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, CIRCA 1864, serial no. 14668,
with 21in. barrel fitted leaf battle rear-sights to 500 yards, the breech top stamped 'BURNSIDE PATENT / MARCH 25TH 1856', (faint), breech block and action stamped with the serial number 14,668, side-rib fitted to the left-side of the action, back-action lock stamped in small letters 'BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. / PROVIDENCE R.I.', two piece iron mounted walnut stock, splinter fore-end with one spring retained band, butt with crescent butt-plate, the barrel rusted, fore-sight missing, action partly jammed, hinge pin broken, and action screw missing, top of breech block dented, forend worn, the butt with some dents and bruises and old owners initials carved in the right side of the butt in large letters
