A RARE CRIMEAN WAR .704 PATTERN 1851 PERCUSSION RIFLE MUSKET MARKED TO THE 1ST BATTALION COLDSTREAM GUARDS, CIRCA 1853, no visible serial number,
with 39in. barrel rifled with four grooves, stamped with Ordnance proofs at breech (faint), block and blade front-sight and ladder rear-sight, the Lovell's pattern bar-action borderline engraved lock with the Crown V.R. cypher on the tail and '1853 TOWER' to the centre, together with the small crown broad arrow government ownership mark, regulation brass-mounted full walnut stock, the right side of the butt stamped 'B.O.' for Board of Ordnance, the buttcap engraved '1. B. C. G. / K / 42' indicating issue to the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, K company, gun number 42, Lovell's spring bayonet catch protruding through nosecap, complete with sling swivels and correct rod, barrel and stock refinished with loss of sharpness

Provenance: The Pattern 1851 Minie rifle was the first rifled longarm intended for general issue to the entire British infantry, only 35,000 were made between 1852 and 1855 and the survival rate is very small. Almost all were issued to regiments in the Crimea. This example is marked to one of the premier regiments of the British Army, the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards who served with distinction during the Crimean War, gaining the battle honours Alma, Inkerman and Sevastopol
