A 16-BORE FLINTLOCK FOWLING PIECE SIGNED GRIFFIN, WITH SPANISH BARREL, CIRCA 1755, no visible serial number,
52in. two-stage iron barrel (possibly slightly shortened), moulded and carved girdle at the intersection, gold shaped poincon marked 'PISTOIA' split on three lines and a further gold poincon with an image of a crouching lion, engraved top-tang, gold-lined touch-hole, rounded and engraved lock with moulded border and pointed tail signed in an engraved banner below the pan 'GRIFFIN', rainproof pan, bridled frizzen and swan-necked cock, walnut hand-rail half-stock (almost certainly reduced from full), carved margin and shell around the top-tang, iron furniture including rococco sideplate with matching escutcheon to wrist and tulip finial to trigger plate, iron fore-end tip and two plain ramrod thimbles applied directly to barrel and replacement ramrod

Provenance: This piece is almost certainly the work of William Griffin, who by 1759 was producing, marking and proofing his own barrels
