A .700 BAKER TYPE FLINTLOCK RIFLE BY BECKWITH, MARKED TO THE GRAY'S INN RIFLE CORPS, CIRCA 1798, no visible serial number,
30in. barrel rifled with seven grooves of slightly rounded form giving 1/4 turn in length of barrel and fitted with a patent chambered breech, small blade fore-sight and on the underside a small stud for a sword bayonet, hinged leaf rear-sight, fitted with a borderline engraved flat style lock bearing the makers name 'BECKWITH' to the centre, brass mounted full walnut stock, the fore-end slit to prevent to prevent jamming of the rod, two rammer pipes, nosecap, scroll trigger-guard, long tanged butt-cap and patchbox, the lid engraved 'JOHN PYE / GRAY'S INN RIFLE CORPS' contained inside the patchbox a set of Baker implements including ball drawer, cleaning jags and turnscrew, complete with sling swivels and original rod
Provenance: This interesting rifle dates the late 1790's and predates the Baker. It has some similarities to the Nock rifles of the period, the maker was in all probability William Andrew Beckwith. In 1803 the Gray's Inn Rifle Corps had a listed strength of 300 riflemen
