A SCARCE 12-BORE 1863 PATENT (SECOND PATTERN) THUMBHOLE UNDERLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 5099,
for 1882, 30in. black powder only bold damascus barrels, the rib engraved 'CHARLES LANCASTER. 151 NEW BOND STREET. LONDON. PATENT BREECH LOADER', and gold-inlaid '1' at the breech end, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, wall thicknesses below recommended minimum, some pitting, action incorporating J. Purdey patent thumbhole underlever, patent no. 1104 of 2nd May 1863 (second pattern), carved fences, striker discs, rebounding back-action locks with snub nosed hammers with spurs of hare's-ear type, border and acanthus scroll engraving, brushed bright and reblued finish overall, 14 3/8in. figured stock, snap fore-end inset with a silver oval escutcheon engraved '1' and with engraved steel finial with finger recess, weight 6lb. 11oz.
