C. REEVES, BIRMINGHAM
AN EXTREMELY RARE .577 PERCUSSION BREECH-LOADING CARBINE, MODEL 'REEVES PATENT' no visible serial number,
conforming to patent no. 2852 of December 15th, 1859, with 21 1/2in. barrel, block and blade fore-sight, carbine style ladder rear-sight, integral receiver with short bolt operating with a butterknife handle and rear-mounted locking catch, incorporating a shaped brass obturator and integral dust-cover, borderline engraved bar-action lock signed 'C. REEVES, PATENT', walnut full-stock with iron furniture including single barrel band near muzzle and provision for under-barrel clearing rod (absent), some mild pin-prick pitting below finish
Provenance: Previously part of the collection owned by the Chairman of the Dunlop Tyre Co. at Fort Dunlop Works, Birmingham.
Despite being granted 11 firearms patents between 1855 to 1866, guns by Reeves seldom appear. Probably the best known are his revolvers but even these are rare. The only other currently known example of this carbine was in the Royal Artillery Museum at Woolwich and an incomplete variant version appeared in Bonhams in 1998
