STARR ARMS, USA
A .54 PERCUSSION CAPPING BREECH-LOADING SINGLE-SHOT CARBINE, MODEL '1858 CARBINE', no visible serial number,
circa 1863, with round tapering 21in. barrel, dove-tailed blade fore-sight, folding notch and 'battle' sight, square receiver with falling-block mechanism and saddle-ring mounted to left hand side, the lockplate signed 'STARR ARMS CO, YONKERS N.Y.', large slab-sided hammer, walnut straight-hand butt-stock carved on the right hand face with a Chinese dragon chasing a pearl (wrist with working inlet repair), brass heel-plate and barrel-band and iron underlever forming the trigger-guard

Provenance: The Qing dragon carving on the butt is typical of rifles and carbines used by the Chinese during the Boxer rebellion. Identical carvings have been found on Mausers, Mannlichers and any number of older, obsolete weapons that found their way into the hands of the Chinese. It is not known however whether the carvings were applied in a patriotic fashion for the benefit of the Chinese troops or post conflict for sale to the Western forces as souvenirs
