A RARE CASED .524 PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SERVICE RIFLE, MODEL 'JACOB'S', no visible serial number,
dated for 1862, with re-browned 24in. barrels, dove-tailed blade fore-sight, ladder rear-sight graduated to 2000yds. with three further folding leaves, plain back-action locks signed 'SWINBURN & SON' together with the date, plain walnut half-stock (cracked forwards of the locks and repaired), iron patch-box to right hand side of butt, the lid engraved 'JACOB'S RIFLES', iron heel-plate and trigger guard with pistol grip raised chequered tang, iron barrel-band and ramrod (rifle re-finished with some mild external pitting) complete with its rare substantial walnut casing constructed to take the assembled rifle full length and containing an original 'Jacob's Rifle' bayonet of usual form with 30 1/4in. double edged twin-fullered blade, pierced iron half-basket with figure '8' muzzle ring, chequered hard rubber grips (some smoothing), light staining to hilt and complete with its leather covered wood scabbard (leather distressed) and iron mounts, also two bullet moulds for differing styles of bullet, a melting pot, leather sling, spring clamp, leather covered flask and other sundry maintenance items with provision for many more
Provenance: These factory casings of Jacob rifles by Swinburn are exceptionally rare. To date only three have been identified. One was presented by Swinburn to Jacob himself as thanks for all the custom he had put their way. Another was presented to The Nizam of Hyderabad, India, one imagines also for services rendered. This example was rumoured to have been given by Jacob to a favoured officer in his unit but this is unconfirmed, It follows the same case styling as the Nizam of Hyderabad's example.
