for 1861, with octagonal twist iron 30 1/2in. barrel, the top-flat with matted section behind the dove-tailed adjustable tunnel fore-sight and marked 'PATENT 1079'? (rubbed), 'GAUGE 451' forward of the elevating ladder rear-sight and ALEX'R HENRY 8 SOUTH ST, ANDREW ST, EDINBURGH' behind, engraved bands and the mask of a tiger at the breech (traces of colour), platinum plug, fully scroll engraved top-tang, fully scroll engraved bar-action lock inhabited with panels of running stags, bolted safe behind the scroll engraved dolphin headed hammer, chequered walnut pistol-grip half-stock, iron patchbox, the lid and hinge engraved with a standing stag surrounded by scrolls, iron heel-plate with scroll and gamescene engraved top-spur and engraved borders around the screws, moulded and scroll engraved grip-cap with central trapdoor for caps, scroll engraved trigger-guard bow with central scene of a stag and full length lower tang, engraved pineapple finial, iron ramrod throat and pipes (under-barrel rib starting to lift) and brass-mounted ebony ramrod

Other Notes: According to the manufacturer's records, this rifle was built as a 'Best Single Barrelled Rifle (source Donald Dallas, 'Alexander Henry - Rifle Maker' first edition 2017. A similar rifle no. 494, made for Lord Vernon but with Henry's 'scroll' hammer is pictured on page 49 of the same volume.
