Other Notes: Kames Gunpowder Works was founded by a local consortium of businessmen in 1839. It continued at its location at Millhouse, Nr. Kames on the Kyles of Bute until 1876 when it was acquired by the firm of Curtis & Harvey, who moved their production from their works at Clachaigs. It continued in business until 1923. Traces of some of the original 20 or so buildings can still be seen today, including the saltpetre refinery, granulating mills and magazine.
