We are kindly informed by the vendor that the gun was gifted to his Mother, Mrs Pamela Johnston (nee Holland) by her Father, Lt. Col. Jack Holland, D.S.O., M.C. in the 1930's, having the escutcheon so marked to celebrate the occasion.

Lt. Col. John Edmund David (Jack) Holland, was a vital cog in the Holland & Holland dynasty, continuing the longstanding family gunmaking tradition by running the company between 1927 and 1957, after a distinguished military career with the 7th and 5th Dragoon Guards. He became a director of the company in 1927 and became Chairman in 1930.

In 1904 Col. Holland married Phyllis Lindsay-Watson, the couple had three children, Pamela being born in 1912 as the middle child. She married Gavin Johnston in 1934.

Literature: For an extensive history of Lt. Col. Jack Holland's early life, military career and his part in the running of the company, please see Chapter Eight 'The Colonel Commands' in Donald Dallas' 'HOLLAND & HOLLAND - THE ROYAL GUNMAKER - THE COMPLETE HISTORY'
