A RARE SEALED PATTERN .577 (SNIDER) SERVICE RIFLE, MODEL 'CROWN AGENT COLONIAL PATTERN MKIII 3-BAND', serial no. 24,
circa 1870, with 36 1/2in. blued barrel, block and blade fore-sight, elevating ladder rear-sight, commercial Birmingham proofs and makers mark 'JKL' near breech (James Kerr, London), flip-open breech with traces of colour, the top marked 'SNIDER'S PATENT', spring-loaded thumb-catch, plain lock with crown device to tail and signed 'V & R BLAKEMORE, LONDON', walnut three-quarter stock bearing a large red wax seal to right hand side of butt (losses to edges of seal, heavy bruising to wood) the remainder reading 'FOR THE COLONIES' and 'APPROVED PATTERN' with a crown, brass furniture except for three iron barrel-bands and jag-ended clearing rod
