probably early 19th century and probably French, with circular marble base with blackened brass gnomon and engraved with daylight hour markings and positioning degrees, all infilled in red, the base mounted with a brass-framed magnifier, adjustable via two tangent braces either side of a central blackened brass saluting cannon with 4 1/2in. barrel, much finish throughout
